Buckflix is a new kid on the block. It is an intense internet startup that will surely put some of that bacon back in your wallet. Motion pictures are distributed via a newer technology called DVD (digital versatile disc). You will have to ask your neighbor to help you pick your lower jaw off the floor when you see the picture quality. OH BOY! We have finally reached the digital age. Just make sure that you don't try to watch it with a CD player because even though they look the same, they don't work the same way. I thought that the movie name was "Error" the first time I tried it out. My face was really a beet red I'll bet.

Status Update

I have been upgraded from wheelchair to crutches. The wheelchair was a burden and I now have even more respect for those who are in them by no choice of their own.

I have a cold now. I took Tuesday off and I came home from work early today (Thursday). It doesn't seem to be a raging cold like I usually get but it isn't over yet.

Thanksgiving is next week. Last Thanksgiving, Lindsey, Erin, and I plowed through Earthbound on the Super Nintendo. Unforgettable.

The doctor says that I might be off of the crutches by January. I told him that it would be a nice Christmas present but he said that I might be pushing it. Doesn't he realize that I push things too far already?

My butt is hurting more because of all the sitting and shifting. My muscles are also weaker. This is not how I hoped my first fall in Tucson would be.

Rained Out

I was looking forward to running tonight. The temperature was in the 90's. It was dark and cloudy when I locked the front door but in about five minutes, clouds turned to hail and the toughest monsoon or just plain storm that we've had since I got here. Power has been spotty and the lightning bolts are hitting too close for comfort. I didn't run today. The rain is still coming down hard.

At it turns out, August 2011 was the second hottest month in Tucson's recorded history. I assume that because the hottest month in recorded history was only in 1994, prior recorded history was destroyed as the servers that hold the data melted to the ground. I have kept myself outside but, wow, it is hot.

The article also says that we're on our way to having the second hottest summer ever. I am told that the monsoons were "light" this year. At least those fires were taken care of.

Desert Chocolate

Not dessert chocolate. Don't mail chocolate to the desert. Or anything that might be heat-sensitive for that matter. Everything that I have received in the mail here is extremely hot. It sits in a truck or sorting facility baking in the sun. Just yesterday I was sent a small metal tool and when I took it out of the package it was too hot to touch. I dropped it on the floor where it sat until it cooled down.

Flash-Bang

We had about a week of relatively cooler temperatures. Hardly any rain but still hitting triple digit during the day. Last night was hot and was above 90 at the coolest.

About twenty minutes ago, I saw some incredible lights and now thunder is ripping it's way through northern Tucson. The map shows that the hot spot is directly over us. If you can catch it on the webcam, Lisa tells me that you can't see bolts but lots of flashes.

So I've been out of work for a full month now. It's a strange feeling. With Erin's non-traditional schedule I can't tell what day of the week it is. If it were cooler, I would lose track of time. I can tell when daytime is because it is much warmer.

Speaking of heat, I've decided that I don't turn on the air conditioning until the inside temperature reaches 90 degrees. And even then, it depends on the wetness of the couch/my clothes etc.. When I turn the air conditioning on and the sun is still up, it does not cool the apartment. It only prevents the inside temperature from going up further until it the sun goes down or until a monsoon hits.

Monsoon

We had our first monsoon of the year (and my first ever) on Monday, the fourth of July. Rain fell hard and fast and it was over as quick as it started. It only lasted about an hour. After the rain, Erin and I went down to the usually dry river bed and watched water pouring from the flood drains into the main river.

Truck, Son

It was Thursday around 2 PM and I was at the airport in Albany. My first flight was going into Washington DC. I get to the airport with plenty of time to spare but when I check the departure monitors my flight does not have a gate listed. No big deal. I'll go down to the terminal where United usually operates in and wait. Eventually we did get a gate and it was in a part of the airport that I have never even seen. Sort of cool. Bad omen? No big deal.

My flight from Albany to DC was mostly uneventful. A woman sat behind me and tapped on my seat as if it were a drum during the whole flight. She also pretended that she had bass pedals. No big deal.

I've been playing with the Garkov site once in a while. Much like daytime TV, you normally get junk but every once in a while, an old episode of Dragnet appears. These are my random Garfield dragnets. I've saved tons of these so I won't post them all today.

I'm Busy

So what? So I'm running out of boxes. I bought a new set of bike racks. They don't make attachments for my old Yakima racks to fit on my Honda factory racks. Years of no use and snow/ice destroyed my old clips. The new ones connect directly to the factory racks, no attachments or adapters needed. The good news is that Erin gets the old ones because she has standard Yakima bars on her car which clips are still made for.

Whatever. Watch some dudes waterski and fish with a sword.

What have I been doing? I started to run again a little bit. I ran much more last year because we were in the 70's and 80's at this time last year. We've only broken 70 once so far and our running club days (Tuesday and Thursday) have been falling on windy or rainy forty-something degree days. It sucks. I can't run in the cold. Treadmills are a fallback but not as fun as outdoors. Tucson, now would be a good time.

So spring has sprung finally. The snow is almost completely gone, we finally hit above 65 degrees (twice) and I have started running again after work with friends. I'm doing my best to spend time with them before we leave. We're leaving Albany, New York, East Coast on June 13th. Erin and I both are very excited and nervous. I have been extremely busy planning the trip and our new lives in Arizona.

I have begun looking for work. I'm cleaning up my resume and plan on posting it soon. I swept up my LinkedIn page. I'm going to have a hard time saying goodbye to my friends. I still don't know how I'm going to do it. Fortunately with the ol' innernett I can keep in touch easier than ever before.

Spring Is Here

Somehow, some way, spring finally got here. Though summer is the best time of the year, spring taught me to appreciate summer and understand what winter does to a person.

The logo changes with the seasons. See? Now the twig has some leaves and the snow has melted. Maybe we'll get some new ones with cactus instead.

It will be cooler this week than the past week but a few warm days with some direct sunlight really made a big difference for me.

Cubivore - A Retrospective

I specifically remember the first time I saw the game box. It was around 2002 or 2003. Netflix wasn't really a thing yet and we all had to go to the Blockbuster or the "blue place" equivalent to rent a movie. Always for too much money. A game rental from Blockbuster was around $8 at one point. Where if I thought I would rent something twice, I would probably also rent it a third time and therefore it would be worth buying used somewhere.

I bought the GameCube on the day it was released. I didn't really plan on doing it but at the time I was working at a PetCo that shared a parking lot with a Target. That morning, I dropped into Target to get that day's lunch before there was a crowd and saw the "new GameCubes here" sign. I casually walked up and asked if they had any. They said that they had just a few more but only the black ones. I bought it, put it in the back of my car, and worked the rest of the day. I remember getting home and sitting down and then remembering that I just bought one. I must have forgotten because I sure didn't plan on buying a new video game system that day. Either way, it was the last time Nintendo had a competitively fast system on the market. And it didn't last long.

Frightened Computer

I ran my standard weekly complete system test yesterday. Because I am working from home, I have been able to run maintenance things (virus, defrag, disk integrity) on my computer that I normally would not do regularly because it is a laptop and not "always on". You should all know this but it is a simple matter of opening a program and clicking go. Then you come back in an hour or so. Sometimes much longer, often much shorter.

Hot Wings

Every other month, I go out to a bar with some friends and we get wings and beers. I'm not much of a beer guy but I am much of a wing guy. The hottest wings here are called "Dare Ya" wings. As in "I dare ya to eat one." When I tell people this it sounds like "dairy uh" or "diarrhea". The second could be somewhat accurate.

We found their spelling of "dareya" to sound too much like one of those medications that has the desired effect in its name. Like Ambien or Wellbutrin.

Slightly Warmer Days

After that terribly cold week we had, we were given the gift of a few warmer days. Nights are still pretty cold but daytime highs were just below freezing which meant that direct sunlight brought water back to its true form until gravity removes it from the infrared love. There are huge icicles hanging off of every rooftop. This one is hanging right off of our porch and is roughly two feet long. I tried to capture it as best I could through our very dirty window.

Ocarina of Time Completed

Just last night, Erin finished Ocarina of Time. It was great to see her finish the game. What a great game. Even with the out dated graphics it still felt like I was watching a movie. She got hooked so quickly. I asked her to play a Gamecube game so that I could test sound levels and video capture. (Ocarina of Time is an N64 game but was put on a Gamecube disc as a promotional item in the early 90's.) In just a few minutes, she wanted to keep going. I really didn't expect that to happen but I'm glad it did.

Booger Icicles

Today I forgot my wallet at home. It contains my key card to get through the security doors at work. The temperature when I went to work today was about -10 Fahrenheit. I would normally wait at the door for the next person, show them my ID, and thank them for letting me inside. There wasn't anybody immediately behind me and standing outside any longer than necessary would be a stupid idea.

The best alternative is walking to the front of the building which is only another 300 yards…if that. There is a security desk there but at least there is a double door area where you could stand out of the cold.

I could also use my phone and call a co-worker but the walk through the building is down two floors and some hallways, basically the same distance (time wise) from me to the front door.

The parking lot that I parked in is less than the distance from the front door and there is a building obscuring the view to the parking lot. If somebody were just walking toward the building at the time I got to the locked door, it would be a shorter walk than that for me to walk to the front of the building. Would I take that risk? Would I hope that somebody were on the way?

I don't know what they expect to get out of me. I just suggest that if you see something odd in a comment from somebody that says something about how great the post is and provides a link to somewhere, don't click on the link. For your safety and the safety of my site. We can try to beat this crap together.

And yes, today is national awareness penguin day. Which for some reason is different than world penguin awareness day.

I have been too frozen to type. Everything is covered in frozen water in some form. Albany's entire population of Squirrels live right above my head in my ceiling. Driving to work and back has become more of a dangerous sport than a depressing ritual. My poor heater needs a rest. When will this madness end? Hopefully around the middle of March. Five Degrees

Five degrees isn't a real temperature. It's more like a joke temperature that you use when you want to say how cold something was without exaggerating too much. You could say it was "like a million degrees below zero" but that's impossible. Sometimes the exaggeration is funnier if it is in the realm of conceivable.

Right now it is five degrees outside. That isn't funny.

Retirement of a Titan

I finally did what I thought was never going to happen. I have retired my 8 year old computer. I wasn't using it as much as I used to and it was very slow by today's standards. It has been replaced with an NAS with some fancy features that would take the place of some of the most important parts of the old computer. So far I am pleased with it. I didn't spend a lot of money.

Waste of time.

I have logged almost nine hours of online competitive Goldeneye time. I'm hovering at level 13 and now am being matched up against people at much higher levels. I am only a running target for them. You get weapon and armor upgrades as you get to higher levels but being matched with somebody much higher is really tough. I have learned to pull the pin on grenades before I think I need them. By the time somebody kills me, I try to leave a live grenade on my body, hoping to kill them as they look over my far inferior artillery.

I played one game with the currently ranked highest player in the whole game. I guess I'm not surprised considering he (assuming it's a male…and it probably is) has played over eight DAYS of game time. I hoped to at least land a bullet on him or something. No such luck. It was cool to see him ghosting around.

I think that I got my first e mail address when I was about 14 years old. I'm not sure what it was exactly but it was an @aol.com address. My family was subscribed to AOL and I was given a super-restricted kid account. Much of what I couldn't do, I didn't even know about. With AOL, you were stuck in their little world but at the time, the internet didn't offer too much so it wasn't a big deal.

Fantasia

Fantasia is my favorite Disney movie of all time. I saw it as a kid and was bored until I saw the dinosaurs. It kept my attention through the rest of the movie and I have only grown to appreciate it more as I get older.

It has been remastered and being re-released along with Fantasia 2000 on blue ray later this year. A classic film like this will receive a lot of attention, especially from a big company like Disney, to get it all cleaned up. I'm really excited to see it.

Goldeneye Beaten

I finished the game today. Even on the medium difficulty level, I had a heck of a time. I will continue to play online to increase my level and hopefully get better. When I play through the game a second time, I will do much better. I've got the aiming down, I'm just not that good at it yet.

My three word rating: nostalgic, fast, weapons. Worth trying but may not be worth buying for most. As much as I want Lindsey and Lisa (and all my friends) to buy this so we can play online, I don't know if they can enjoy it. I just played a single round with Erin. Erin has never played anything like this. She has no background in first person shooter games. She didn't do that bad. She uses the Wii-mote which allows you to just point at the enemy instead of using a controller to aim. I think that this is why I was getting beaten up so bad online. She got me a few times right out of the gate.

But what a cool game! The re-imagination of the original. Similar characters but I am awful. It has been eleven or twelve years since I have played a first person shooter very seriously. It was actually this same game on the Nintendo 64. The controls are so sensitive and I'm getting destroyed both during online play and during the game itself.

I wish I didn't talk so much trash before this game came out. It's going to take a while for me to get my FPS legs back. 14 year olds are killing me with ease.

Bike Pizza

Tonight I am attending a Halloween party that is being catered by an Albany local who makes pizzas himself and delivers them on his bike. The unique thing about it is that you can only order through Twitter. The host pre-ordered four pizzas for tonight's party which, if you're a one man operation, could be the whole night. I'll report back later with how it went and with our Halloween costumes.

No Hiking

I'm going to a 24 hour sci-fi, fantasy, horror, comedy, miscellaneous movie marathon this weekend with a friend of mine. I am finally going to be able to see 2001: A Space Odyssey the way it is meant to be seen. ~~In a room full of hippies on LSD.~~ On the big screen. The name of the event is Proctoberfest and has nothing to do with butt doctors. The place is called "Proctors" and it's in October.

I was a little curious when he invited me to Proctoberfest. He pointed to my computer indicating that he wanted me to look up the website and see if I was interested. I couldn't take my eyes off his finger.

This is the complete film lineup. I plan on surviving on a dozen Dunkin' Donuts and beef jerky. Maybe two dozen.

Soap Opera Face

During the wedding reception, we had a photo booth available to our guests. The booth prints two sets of three photos. We (the groom and bride) get one of those sets which gets immediately pasted into an album and our guests sign by it. It is a great thing to have and it's also a popular thing in Minnesota.

Needless to say, we got a ton of great photos. I am working on getting all of them right now. This is my favorite.

I will be hiking Mt. Marcy in a few weekends. Mt. Marcy is the tallest mountain New York at 5,343 feet. It looks like a beautiful place and I'm really looking forward to the hike. I hope we don't get rained on. I already know that it's going to be cold on the mountain. It is starting to get cold out here and a friend and I would like to do it before the snow starts to fall.

Ever since I returned to New York, I have been very busy at work. We were glad to see Clover waiting for us (alive) when we got home. She's a sweet little cat. I think Murray would beat her in a fight but I'd rather have Clover sleep close to my face than Murray.

Clover is my cat. Murray is my sister's cat in California. Murray doesn't like people very much. He's a very soft cat and I'd like him on my side in a fight so I could pet him and watch him punch at the same time.

Duke Nukem was a fantastic 2D side-scrolling platformer that was released for the PC back in 1991. Duke Nukem 2 was released shortly afterward in 1993 and Duke 3 was the first 3D Duke released in 1996. Duke 4 was announced in 1997. Duke 4 is set for release in 2011.

I have written about Duke on this site here before. The last time was June of 2008 (go ahead and check the archive). I won't keep talking about the long hard road it has been but I really did give up hope. I was sure that we would never see it when the company making it went out of business. The rights and property for the project was picked up by another company who realized the brand recognition was too great to just let go.

When I was a kid, my local library would occasionally have "clearance" sales to get rid of outdated books. They were always sold at an incredible discount however I hardly see the value in a twenty-five year old Farmer's Almanac or or three volumes of a fifty volume encyclopedia.

I did get a kick out of the old computer books. I don't know if I learned anything useful from them but it made me look smarter to have them around.

This site called Awful Library Books posts reader images and scans of, well, awful library books. There are some bad ones. Some are now politically incorrect or scientifically unimportant. There's a good one about helicopters. This one about Burt Reynolds is my favorite. Maybe even if it's a bit creepy.

Big Pants

I don't have any new wedding photos to share today. I keep hoping that somebody will e mail some to me from their personal camera.

I've been playing Dragon Quest 9 lately. I put a lot of effort into it before the wedding/honeymoon trip and have been stuck in almost the same place since we made it back. The final bad guy is really tough but I was trying to do it my way (one party member) and not the more common way (four party members). I don't know how you'd do it alone so on Saturday I added three party members and I'm going to try again.

I'm going hiking with my dad next month out in California and he bought me some pants for the trip. My day-to-day pants are Levi's 550 34x34 and could now wear a 32" waist but that's what belts are for. When he asked my size, he bought a pair of pants which corresponded to that size (large, 34" length). I used to wear a large but when I got these pants, they were huge. Way bigger than comfortable and to the point of unusable.

The waist was large but I could have lived with it using the included belt. The pant legs ran under my feet even with my shoes on. These things are huge!

Infinity and Mario Music

Survey's gone! Links are going to start opening in a new window/tab for you. I'm glad we got through this together. Have a soda. The radio should also be working as it was before. I had a lot of trouble with the newest version of VLC so I went back to the old one.

Today started a little sticky but then we hit some rain followed by some bright, hot sun. It was 85 degrees and 90% humidity. Sticky.

I've been hooked on Dragon Quest 9 this past week. It may be the best traditional RPG I have ever played and definitely the best game released on the DS in quite some time.

I have a question for you. Registered user or not. Bot or not. Lurker or not. There are different ways for a URL (link) to open in a web browser. I want to know what you prefer. It is as easy as flipping a switch. Would you prefer your links to continue in this current browser window or open up a new window or tab? (Hint: Click on those to see what I'm talking about.)

Personally, I prefer a new tab but have been using the "old" same window way for as long as the site has been up. When I learned about this stuff, tabs didn't exist and opening up a new window was a "pop-up" and a no-no. Now they act as tabs depending on your browser.

What do you like? The poll will sit at the top of the home page and at top of each post for a little while. I'm curious what you guys think. If you have any better ideas, drop them in the comments to this post.

Bacon and Other Animals

Today is one of those awesome days that happens to be lucky enough to fall on a weekend. I spent a few hours downtown today at the Troy Pig Out. I had two pulled pork sandwiches, two ears of corn, some corn bread, a churro and a big strawberry lemonade. Everything was great. The bacon that was on my pulled pork sandwich from Jacked Up BBQ from Fork River, NJ was the best bacon I have ever had in my whole life. It was thick and crispy and had that perfect balance of salt and pepper with a hickory taste. They called it "pig candy". With live Muddy Waters playing in the background, it almost brought a tear to my eye.

County fairs are coming back. It is my favorite time of year. The most delicious unhealthy food surrounded by rides built by the people who weren't trustworthy enough to serve you said food. "Wonder" products and cheap knock-offs. Some of the things you can't cheap-out on are the animals and the talent. I love watching the unusual shows. At the Los Angeles County Fair, there was always a glass blower tucked away in some corner. Probably because he was using a stove that was a million degrees.

I always thought that the glass blower was one of the more talented guys/girls at the fair. This guy does something called glass microbiology. He makes glass microbe models. They are really cool looking. There is a slide show at the top of the page. Scroll through some of those and then check out the video. Do you think he's make me a tiny penguin for two dollars?

Text Messages and Shoes

By now, everybody has read all of the "studies" and laws about sending a text message while driving. I just saw an ad on a web page for a system that allows you to listen to your text messages get translated to voice from your cell phone via a Bluetooth headset and then respond with your voice which is translated to text and sent off. Is this not what a phone is for? We send text messages during meetings or at work for quick "see you there" messages but for a conversation, we use our phone as a phone. Right?

We get free "mobile to mobile" calls and free calls to in-network users. If you're going to buy a Bluetooth headset, just make the dang phone call. If you have to communicate with a land line, you aren't going to be sending text messages anyway. I'll bet the cell phone service companies just love this. $.10 per message when a kid goes over the limit is just what they want.

I send tons of text and photo messages. I love text messaging but this is just stupid.

I've also recently read that kids are better (safer) than adults at text messaging and driving at the same time. This doesn't surprise me. Adults are much better drivers in general but kids use phones like second nature.

Radio Day and Dog Baking

One of the best holidays of the year is right around the corner. The 4th of July is the best summer holiday. You get a day off of work and see sparkle bombs while eating hot dogs on a warm summer night. There are few things better than that and I can't mention them here.

Bring out your flags. Wait…1…2…3……50……59…60…61? 61!? That's not an American flag sir. You must have that confused with the patriotic banner sold at the dollar store. Patriotic Banner Day happens to be the same day as National Radio Day (August 20th). If you wave it fast enough, I don't think anybody will notice.

This is not a joke about the dollar stores or Chinese made stuff. I love them both. Both are American. You read that right. Capitalism, free trade, and self responsibility! USA!

Lots of Underwear

I quickly want to say thanks again to everybody who is sending wedding gifts. You guys are very generous and very cool. This is the current pile of boxes. It seems that stuff is sitting in front of the door every day when I get home.

Thinking about that, I came across this link last night. I thought it was a fake product but it looks real. It's called the Better Marriage Blanket. What does it do? It's a nice looking blanket filled with activated carbon to act as a filter to capture your smelly farts. Activated carbon is found in many types of filters and it does wonders but it is only the sponge that catches the particles. The particles still have to be forced through it somehow. I don't see this blanket doing too much unless you're cutting some high velocity farts directly into the blanket.

Futurama and Barstools

Futurama is back on the air. I hear good things. I hated that show when it first aired but learned to love it through reruns. I'm excited for it to be back. If you're in the land of pay TV, catch it on Comedy Central.

This Funplex Fun Park looks like a good time. I might check it out this weekend but I'd hate to go alone. Erin is in Minneapolis getting her dress fit and enjoying brunch with other ladies. She's getting a trial hair do as well.

Photo Feed Work and PayPhrase

I use Amazon.com for a ton of different things. Mostly video games and music but everything else from water filters to bike parts. I'm not sure when they started doing it but when I go to the site now, there is something called a PayPhrase. It might be similar to their "1-click" checkout. I really don't know how the PayPhrase it is supposed to work but this suggested one got my attention. They change it up each time I visit the site. I guess that they want to make unique phrases. It reminds me of the CAPTCHA stuff or even better, the old temporary use AOL CD/diskette passwords.

Regardless, I don't know what stern digging is, why it needs to be capitalized, of if I'm even the Jason in question. Clicking on "What's this?" wasn't helpful.

Now to something much more boring.

Earthquake in...New York?

We had an earthquake today. Well, by "we" I mean most of the northeastern states felt it. I was on the third floor at the building where I work and things started swaying. There is a ton of construction going on outside but it didn't feel like construction to me or to the one other guy who spent a few years in southern California. It felt like a 2 or 3 from the third floor which meant it was probably less on the ground floor.

Sure enough, a 5.0 earthquake was reported in Canada! It's a good thing nobody lives there. Here's the Did You Feel It? map from the USGS public reporting website.

It's a once-in-a-decade event out here and it caused a bit of panic and a lot of talk. It's a "who cares" weekly thing back home in the California desert but like a hailstorm in Joshua Tree, everybody gets confused. It made me smile.

Officially it was about a 2 in Albany, NY.

My favorite movie is 2001: A Space Odyssey. A few of my favorite directors are Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino. I'm not a huge Coen Brothers fan but I did like most of No Country for Old Men. The ending was confusing and disappointing. I'm sure there's a deeper meaning to it all, I just don't care to learn what it is.

Thanks to great weather, I went out on my bike this past Saturday. I was in a more rural area with farmland and a few houses here and there. As I approached a gradual hill, I heard a familiar sound behind me. I heard the sound of a dog running. His nails scraping against the asphalt and heavy breathing.

I was already very tired. I turned around and I saw a black dog running toward me. Not in a friendly way. He was completely off of the ground, front legs between his rear legs. Once I saw him, he started growling and barking, teeth showing. My first thought was to go as quickly as I can in the opposite direction. He was about forty feet behind me. I immediately began cranking as fast as I could.

I was in a good gear to climb up a long, gradual hill. I wasn't in a good gear for getting away from an angry dog. With him coming at me at that speed, I had no time to shift. So off I went.

First off, great job Lynn for getting that job!

Second, thanks for the responses on improving this site. I came up with a few ideas that I'll be trying over the summer.

All of the big E3 presentations are over. Everything that was going to be announced has been announced. People are really excited about the 3D Nintendo DS. It doesn't require glasses. I'll have to see it to believe it.

If you care to watch any of the presentations, go here. I suggest the Microsoft one. The Nintendo one stunk and Sony was mediocre at best.

My site started as an experiment to serve mostly as a resume while I looked for a job in New York. It didn't help very much but I enjoyed using it as a sandbox to play with things. Ultimately it turned into this and I love to play with it. It has taught me a lot and pushed it's way from project to hobby.

As you know, I had to update the site about six months ago. The old site was slow and looked too old. There were plenty of things that needed to be updated. I knew what to do and how to do it, I just don't have the time to do everything. If this were my job and I had a few other people with me, it would be been fun to do our own thing. I instead decided to find a package where the work was done and I only do minimal maintenance.

But I'm still getting beaten up.

E3 2010 - Rad

E3 is on this week and out of the Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony keynotes, Microsoft dominated. Last year's "Natal" project is officially known as "Kinect" and the tech demos were outstanding. ESPN is coming to Xbox Live and the whole system is nothing short of amazing.

Sony's stage time was pretty average. New stuff, good graphics, a funny spokesperson. No huge game announcements.

Nintendo disappointed this year. Not only was their very first tech demo with the legendary create of Mario and Zelda himself, but their flagship new Zelda game was very buggy. It was blamed on wireless interference. I believe them as Nintendo is known for the best controls in the industry. No huge games but a big new handheld system with 3D that does not require 3D glasses. No idea how it works but I'll check it out at my local nerd stores.

I can't wait for Dragon Quest 9 (out this July) but I found a game that Erin will love. Epic Yarn. Kirby's Epic Yarn to be precise but…yarn!

E3 and Toys

E3 is up next week. If you don't know, E3 is the big video game trade show that is held every year. It's where we find out what new video games and maybe systems we will be able to get the next year. It sounds like it would be a fun trade show to attend. Any trade show around a topic of interest sounds fun to attend unless it's your job. I used to go to the big bicycle show in Las Vegas every year and it turned a hobby into a job. But still, I wish I could go.

The Mortal Kombat teaser I posted a few days ago has been matched with a teaser video. I was never a huge Mortal Kombat fan but I really appreciate and respect the speed and skill of the players.

Strongmen and Monopoly

I had a very good, long update written out on Saturday but I didn't save it. I closed the program too soon. I was too upset to start over again then. This time I have a whole ton of junk to share so buckle up.

You probably remember talking about ditching Time Warner. I have since been watching a lot of cartoons, many of them Looney Tunes. Cartoons are still a beautiful form of artistic expression but the style has changed. I love to read John K's blog (well, look at the pictures more than anything). This is the guy who did Ren and Stimpy and is a bit of a guru on cartoons. I found another great site specific to the backgrounds drawn for the cartoons. The site is simply called Animation Backgrounds and is worth a look. I don't know how this person would have access to all of these old background images. I'm sure that they aren't being scanned from originals.

A side note, the spell checker wanted it to be "Reno and Stumpy".

So the weather was pretty nice all weekend. I hesitated going outside on Saturday because the forecast all day (and all weekend for that matter) was scattered thunderstorms. Just when I would get excited, it would get really stormy looking and I'd shy away.

Saturday was not completely lost. As you may remember, I cancelled Time Warner cable and have watched much less TV since then. When we made the decision to finally ditch it, I had to re-evaluate what I really watched on TV. Most of that answer is 'cartoons'. Most of these cartoons I already own on DVD. It didn't take a genius to figure out what I needed to do.

Great Weather!

It feels like home. We had a high of 93 degrees here in Albany today. I had to get outside. I left a bottle of water in my car and when I picked it up before my drive home, it had to be 100 degrees. I sure missed this. Living in a place with seasons makes you appreciate heat.

So, even though Mario Galaxy 2 is out and in my Wii, I had to take the time to get outside. But let's not forget. Mario Galaxy 2 is a great game. I'm about one third of the way in and I am very impressed.

Mario Galaxy 2 will be out in just a few hours (Sunday) and I'll pick up my reserved copy some time tomorrow.

The original Mario Galaxy is one of the best rated video game ever and my favorite game produced in the last 13 (!) years. The second one is getting great previews already and I'm very excited about it.

This video is of footage from the original Mario Galaxy game from 2007. Clips were mashed up with a Queen song and it came together beautifully. Don't stop me now.

Bit Trip Runner

I have never liked rhythm games. I don't like Dance Dance Revolution or modern day Dance Dance Revolution (also known as Guitar Hero or Rock Band). I did find a rhythm game that I do like. It is a great looking game an as frustrating as it is fun. Video games aren't rewarding unless you feel like punching a hole in the wall at some point. This is one of those.

Bit Trip Runner is the fourth of the Bit Trip games by Gaijin Games. All are available on Wii Ware and probably worth the small price for download. Bit Trip Runner came out just yesterday and it was the first of the Bit Trip games that I have bought. I played for over two hours to complete the first world.

The game is a music-based side scrolling game. This means that you jump, slide, or kick to the beat of the music. Of course, this means that your character is running at a constant pace that you can not control. This makes it hard. This guy does not want to slow down.

Time-Lapse and Big Dogs

I just made this. I set the webcam up to take a photo every hour in addition to streaming the video. I started it about two months ago and this is what I have so far. It's pretty cool to see the end of winter turn into spring. I started it after the last of the snow melted so we don't get to see snow but who wants to see snow anyway.

One hour equals 1/10 second. I'll let it keep going and see if I can get a whole year.

I have been so very busy lately. Not the busy "I don't want to call you back so I'll say I have been busy" type of busy but the real busy. We're making wedding plans and I have been spending a lot of time outside. Right now it is so nice outside but I hurt my ankle. I'm stuck on the couch for at least a few days. Here I am. At least the weekend will be nice. I'll try to do something this weekend, no matter what the pain.

Maybe we'll go see that animated dragon movie. The new Iron Man is out. Maybe I'll go and see that with Erin. We just got the first one in the mail through Netflix.

We're also working on our registry. We'll be ready to make that public soon. The invitations were sent out just a few days ago.

Cats and Old CGI

I have been busy and the weather has been great. But today the weather sucks and the only thing I have to do can wait. Let's waste some time on the internet.

When I was in junior high school, there was a substitute that was anything but a substitute teacher. He would bring in videos for us to watch and I assume he just ignored any lesson plan based on what the teacher would ask us when he or she got back. Anyway, beside watching Dumb and Dumber, my favorite things to watch were these Mind's Eye videos. They were basically short CGI films set to trendy music. They look like crap by today's standards and they don't even keep a corny charm to them. Anyhow, you can watch some clips here.

The bird/fish one called "Love Found" has been stuck in my head for twelve years. It was nice to see it again.

Army Men and Tee-Ball

I didn't play with dolls (action figures) as a kid. I don't know if we just didn't have the money for them or if it was a way for my dad to say that he didn't want me to play with miniature versions of muscular men with tight costumes. I'd like to believe both. I did have a bag of army men that were what remained from who knows how many plastic wars. Nothing matched. Colors were not the same, some were really tall, some were hotwheels. They all wound up with the same fate. A horrible death brought on by their omnipotent leader and maybe some neighborhood kids as well.

We had a push lawn mower with the big spinning blades which is what most everybody has in southern California because it's hard to justify anything else for a two-hundred square foot lawn. That lawn mower was only used enthusiastically when it was being used to chop up plastic army men and subsequently ruin the blades. They would also be classically melted together with a magnifying glass, crushed by bicycle tires, or simply rubbed to death against the pavement.

Radical Weather, Dude!

As I type this, it is 7 PM and 82 degrees outside. I am on the porch. I tried to take a nap but it was actually too warm. It was such a nice day. I wish today wouldn't end. Our neighbors are having a picnic or something right now with their friends. We will see thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow but it will still be warm and I could hang out on the porch watching the rain fall.

Today, Erin and I have been together for 5 years. That's a long time.

Squirrels and Hold Music

I liked squirrels until I moved to Minnesota. The squirrels there ate my plastic furniture which was expensive (to the extent that plastic Ikea furniture can be expensive), irritating, and noisy. I had a weighted sun umbrella holder that we filled with water for weight. They chewed through it so the water drained and it was useless. As if there is no ground water in Minnesota.

When I moved out to Albany, I inherited squirrels that live in my attic. Because it is an apartment, I don't have much power over what isn't mine, specifically the attic. They set traps and it does help but those little jerks have a gym and social club right over my bed. They even chewed through our FIBER OPTIC CABLE (internet). Why would anything do that? It wasn't in the way, it doesn't taste like anything.

I have learned to hate squirrels even if they are cute. I won't intentionally hit one on the road and I will let them be as long as they let me be. But if I had the power over the jerks that have parties above my bed, there'd be bags of squirrels in the dumpster.

Tech Harmony

In the year 2010, everybody has electrical stuff all over the house. The operation of most, like the clock on the microwave, are made very simple. We don't really see these things as computers or even technology. The wheel is considered technology, but for the scope of this post, let's consider technology to be the things that use electricity and work with an on/off switch.

These things require some knowledge or experience to use but once you know how to set the clock on your microwave, you could probably set a clock on any microwave. Next, you can set all of the clocks in the house to a similar time. This is the first step.

Dawn Soap

I just saw a commercial for Dawn dish washing soap. The commercial is cute with some very simple acoustic music to go along with it. One point for cute. It shows hands washing the baby animals that are covered in a human crime to nature, spilled oil. One point for guilt, one point for green. The objective of the commercial is to advertise a Dawn promotion where they will "donate" a dollar for every bottle of this soap that you buy if you register your bottle of soap online. Yes, really.

This is brilliant marketing. Guilt, cute, "green". You think "even if this soap is a dollar more than the cheap stuff, it's going to a good place".

There are a few things about this that should make anybody say "hold on a second".

Pizza Pizza

It was cold and windy yesterday and it took some extra push to get me out the door. I was riding home on a busy street from a local park with some trails. A Little Ceasars pizza place opened just last year and it's hard pizza business in New York. There was a person dancing around on the side of the road, in front of this Little Ceasars, holding a sign and dressed in a big foam costume of Ceasar himself. I love the five dollar pizza so I when I got closer, I held my hand out for a high-five. Ceasar saw me and when we "fived", I heard the girl in the costume yell "woo hoo" (I had no idea it was a girl until then). The rest of the ride home was just as cold and windy but warm pizza danced in my head. It made the whole ride worth it.

It is pretty chilly out this morning. Not much like last weekend although we did have a nice few days this week. We're in the low 40's right now with plenty of wind. I don't know if I will get outside today (feels like 36) but if the wind stops and we get up in the mid 50's, I'll give it a shot.

It is a very nice day out, just like yesterday. I spent a lot of time out yesterday. I went to get a haircut today but everybody is closed. I need a haircut.

I just got a small flip video camera with frequent flyer miles. I didn't take it with me yesterday but I had a chance to play with it today. I walked around the complex just about an hour ago and saw a few branches with three baby turtles sunning themselves on them. As I got close, they instinctively jumped into the water. I sat and waited for them to return and found a small catfish beneath the larger branch. As I was filming him, the bravest turtle made a second appearance and climbed up the branch.

April Fools' Day - Be Safe

Somebody close to me had an e mail account hacked. Whether it was through phishing or clever software/virus, the account log in information was obtained and used to send out many e mails to everybody in their address book. If you are on this site, you may have gotten one and know all about it.

Geocast Drive Home

I found IncaX this morning and started to play with it. It is software that will record or broadcast live video to a web page along with your physical location via GPS. I broadcasted my drive home from work. You could have actually watched it live but this is the recorded version. The video is choppy because it is a live broadcast. Had I recorded it to my phone and uploaded it later, it would have been much smoother.

You know that big nice high-definition TV you have in the front room. The one you sit far enough away from that you can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080 even if you paid for the 1080? Yea, that one. Octopuses can tell the difference. They have tried to attract them with images before but standard definition TV images were obviously fake to them. Octopuses have expensive taste.

Raccoon's Dancing and Pretzels

I read this article a few days ago. It's about a jellyfish that can reverse it's adult form back to it's polyp (baby) form, over and over. The ability to do this can mean that it is able to live "forever". Usually when we hear about a life form living for thousands of years it is a network of trees, a fungus, or some coral colony but this is a single thing. I wonder if it voluntarily turns back into a baby (as if a jellyfish does anything "voluntarily"). Maybe if it doesn't do it by a certain point of it's adulthood, it grows old and dies. Maybe the only way that this species dies is through non natural causes. What a grim thought that is.

I like the live camera feed. It is actually a security camera that I bought really cheap about a year ago. I didn't think about playing with it until a couple of weeks ago. It looks like those who have seen it, like it so far. I hope it works on all browsers.

MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) is a favorite show of mine. When it was finally cancelled in the late 90's, I was sad but I didn't realize how many of them were made. I found a page of MST3K haiku. There aren't a ton but it's worth a look.

I love cats and dogs. You have all seen this video before. This is an automatic cat washer. I know that I have linked it in the past but I just re-discovered it today and I remembered how funny it is.

I always recommend against reading youtube comments and this is no exception. So many people write about cruelty and how horrible it is for the cat. Whatever. The cat doesn't want to be there but it's not getting hurt. Do you think your cat wanted to get spayed? Nobody's animal wants a bath.

There are some things that are fun on the internet that can be completely innocent. All of those cats. I'll bet half of the web is cats and bad grammar. Babies are fun, too. Why not put some laser eyes on those babies? Here's my favorite so far.

Remember the muppets? Their voices got all weird as they were passed on to different sets of muppet wranglers. I don't know the muppets as well as the Simpsons but I was able to identify more of these than I thought. Not like a lot of them but more than I expected. Hover over the muppet for more info. That's a weird sentence.

I started spending a lot of time in airports when I moved out of California. I know that we should be grateful to be able to travel the country to easily and quickly but flying...still sucks. The seats are too small for any normal height or weight person. I once had my luggage completely searched. I was pulled aside and searched as well. I'm willing to do this and grateful that the poor TSA employees put up with this stuff. It isn't so bad. Just be prepared and everybody will thank you. Batman and Dinosaurs

I'm home sick from work today. I got up at my normal time planning on making it in but even though I don't feel terrible, I have a sore throat. I know, only a baby would stay home from work with a sore throat but I work in a small department and it's easy to get everybody else sick.

Science took a break from doing important medical research to work on his dinosaur hobby last week. I don't understand how it is possible but they figured out how to determine the colors of the dinosaur and came up with this cool looking skunk-cat claw bird looking thing. They probably use a real name for it like Anchiornix huxleyi or some thing like that.

I don't know why this is such a big deal, we already know what dinosaurs would look like with hair.

Confession Time

My site has been up for nearly two and a half years. I play with it almost every day and I enjoy doing things with it. I see things on other sites that I like and I want to do them myself. There are easy ways to do them which are usually inexpensive. I decide to do them the hard way which will can consume my whole weekend but I will save $10. It isn't really worth it when you look at it like that but I learn from it. This is my hobby.

The biggest change to my site came just recently at the beginning of 2010. I knew how to do everything that I wanted to do, I just didn't want to spend the time doing it. I found some free open source software that will allow you to build a whole site just how you want it. Somebody else already went through the trouble to make the fonts the right size or to take care of a log-in system. I felt like I had given up and joined the status quo.

Squirrels and Flannel

I am really enjoying doing the broadcasting. Creating playlists is the most difficult thing. I'm running my monthly computer check right now but when it's done, I'll throw up some more stuff.

I think that I am a pretty fast typer. I like the positive-response "click" keyboards. In fact, my desktop keyboard is one of the IBM M-series keyboards and is only two years younger than me. When my friend brings his two year old over, I let him walk on it and hit it because he likes buttons and nothing will ever happen to that seven pound keyboard. Das Keyboard is a company who produced a keyboard with no letters on the buttons to encourage people to learn to type. I thought it was cool but it was arrogant geeks with too much money who turned into their target market. The keyboard is still totally cool and if it weren't so expensive, I'd get one in 2036 when my IBM wears out.

Das Keyboard is sponsoring the first ever world typing championship. I would be interested in seeing what the fastest typer looks like in action.

Axe Cop and Darwinians

Darwinia is a great game that was released about five years ago by a small company called Introversion (great name for a small company). It's a game about artificial life forms that were created inside of a computer. The little darwinians learned to evolve and develop their own world. Computer viruses begin to attack them and you need to fight back.

Right now it is only available for the computer. If you can find the game for cheap, pick it up. I bought it for only $5 from a bargain bin when I lived in Minnesota. The box cover is bright green and always caught my eye. Amazon is selling it now for a crazy $43. It is going to be released on the Xbox very soon which is a bit confusing to me because I can't imagine playing it without a mouse.

I just wanted to promote a tiny game that I really enjoyed playing.

Whales are cool. Super cold in this case. I found these pictures of beluga whales a few days ago. The third picture is my favorite. It's gonna eat you.

I like seeing those National Geographic articles about animal species that have recently been discovered. This isn't a National Geographic article but it has some great pictures. The last one is depressing but I hope that they use that clear cut rainforest for great cheap beef. Not optimistic, realistic.

Cute Explosions and Radio Frequency Oddities

If you played video games in the late eighties and early nineties, you know that the production budgets weren't as large as they are now. Many games were made in Japan and would only be released in the US if they were successful after a year or more. There was no internet buzz on releases or special showings. You would just suddenly see Faxanadu at Target. Because the original targets for these games were not English-speaking kids, translation was not on the top of the minds of the programmers and it would occasionally be a whole different group of people translating the game. They wouldn't know the context or story line like those who produced the game so some translations were a bit off. Also, depending on the translator, budget, and people simply not giving a crap, you could make the game even more confusing. Here are some classic bad game translations and a bonus bad Japanese animation subtitles. I have a feeling that some of the cartoon translations are fake.

Simpsons and Food

This past Sunday was The Simpsons 20th anniversary special. It was a new episode (a pretty good one) followed by a one hour special which was a short documentary on the influence of the Simpson family on the world. It was pretty good but not great. Two weeks ago was one of the better episodes that I have ever seen. I was amazed when d'oh became a real word and I'm still against it as much as I love the show. The stupid words that they add to dictonaries each year make dumb culture official. Speaking of fake stuff becoming real, look at the stupid Simpsons stuff that became real. The good morning burger. Die before noon.

I had a telescope growing up but I haven't seen it in years. I used to stay up late and sit in the backyard for hours with it. It was still never as good as lying on the ground in the desert looking straight up with none of the light pollution of the city. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter was launched in the middle of last years and it has returned some really great pictures so far. Here are some of those pictures and for fun some pictures from decades ago.

I think that bad grammar bothers me because I suck with grammar myself. I'm already a bad speller and depend on computers to correct my spelling for me. I had to write a letter by hand in front of somebody about two months ago and was embarassed by my spelling and grammar. It was even worse because we were limited for time and she gave me a pen and the paper had no lines so the text did that droopy thing where it aligned on the left but got smaller and fell down on the right.
